Why do we like this?
Since their breakout album Writers Block in 2006, Peter Bjorn, and John have taken a turn from indie crooners to lo-fi indie punk rockers.
Gimme Some, which drops today (March 29) exemplifies the Swedish trio's need for something a little heavier. Peter Moren, Bjorn Yttling, and John Eriksson overlap fast-paced guitar riffs with harmonized vocals creating a tropical-surf feel in songs like "Dig a Little Deeper" and "Eyes."
As their sixth full length studio album, Gimme Some is a raw and gritty version of their former selves. Since their light-hearted, whimsical hit "Young Folks," the trio has traded in the whistle for the "hoo-hoo" and the simplistic guitar and drum beats for sharp, hard-hitting instrumentals.
Heavy bass and surf rock guitar beats introduce single "Eyes." The toe-tapping beat is a nod to 70s rock with harmonized vocals and psychedelic riffs, used throughout the album as a common undertone.
The closing track, "Tomorrow Has To Wait," is a fight to live your life to the fullest. This tune is a perfect way to end the album. With an upbeat tone and repetitive lyrics, the anthem slows things down in a soothing and memorable way.
We featured a track off Gimme Some back in January - listen to "Breaker Breaker" here.
