A few years back, I fell head over heels in love with a Sydney band called Jinja Safari. I saw them live a bunch of times and listened to their music constantly, but then decided I'd had enough and moved on -- I'd definitely overdone it. Now, listening to the debut single from their co-frontman Pepa Knight, I remember why I dug them so much.
"Rahh!" is the first release from Knight's upcoming solo album, a record he put together during his travels to India between 2011 and 2013. Jinja Safari always had plenty of international flavor on their tracks, and Knight hasn't shied away from that formula (if anything, he's increased it!). The percussion, instrumentation, and live samples all contain that worldly touch, and this gives it an incredibly fantastical vibe. Add all that to Knight's soaring, soulful vocals and there's very little not to love about this one.
A great first offering from this promising side-project. Keep an ear out for news on Knight's full album rollout over the coming months.
