I love a good podcast or mixtape. Not only can I have it playing in the background to whatever I'm doing, but every now and then I'll hear a tune which makes me stop in my tracks, run over to the computer, find the tracklist, guesstimate what I'm listening to, Google or Shazam it, and add it to a playlist so I can listen to it again.
The new Ministry of Sound mixtape by London duo SpectraSoul features an outstanding collection of liquid drum and bass tracks, and I highly recommend dedicating some time listening to this in its entirety. However, there is one song featured in the tracklist that I think should be highlighted, and that's the SpectraSoul remix of Pedestrian's "Hoyle Road."
I still remember where I was when I first heard the original of this song. The smooth opening vocals of Pedestrian singing "another day slips away" were enough to make me immediately stop what I was doing and focus 100% of my attention on the song to absorb the wonderful sound that was erupting through my headphones.
My second thought to "this is absolutely incredible" was "I bet there's a remix," and sure enough with minimal effort I stumbled across this SpectraSoul version.
There's a very thin line between which version I prefer, however, SpectraSoul's added percussion, prominent bass line, and vocal echoes add an element of sharpness to the tune that defines perfection. The shivers down my spine continue with the drop at 3:07.
Pedestrian sings about weekends gone by; how days can merge into each other and not wanting it to end: "yesterday seemed far away, today is nearly gone, tomorrow's gloomy"¦" -- it's a stunning remix of a song. Both artists have nailed this one and each has added a whole new meaning to my musical repertoire.
If you can't listen to the whole MOS SpectraSoul mixtape, then at least give this one a listen.
