Sounds like:
TV On The Radio,
Twin Shadow
Why do we like this?
Anyone can make music; I know I did when I banged pots and pans around as a child. But what is the purpose of music making? Irrefutably, an artist's goals is to merely to entertain the listener on some level. Sometimes it can be just that simple.
Not Patrick Gregoire, though. Under the moniker Pat Jordache, Gregoire (along with Phillip Karneef, Rory Seydel, Jeffrey Malecki, Thomas Gillies, and Patrik Winkelbrunn) takes it to a deeper level to affect the listener on a sub-conscious level, especially on his new LP Future Songs. Pat Jordache claims that "frequencies omitted from the audio spectrum literally demand an active participation on the part of the listener's imagination. This process short-circuits the passive consumption endemic to advanced capitalism's commodification of art."
To be honest, I listened in a trace-like state. Perhaps it was because I had a hard time decoding the lyrics, perhaps because I thought he sounded a bit like TV On The Radio (whom I love), perhaps because I really loved the album through and through, or lastly, perhaps because he worked through massive obstacles to complete this album.
Imagine how great it feels to complete an entire album. Now imagine having your computer stolen with all the masters on it. Think about how hard it must have been to summon the patience, time, optimism, and funds to get back on the horse and start from scratch to complete a truly amazing and interesting piece of work. This is the story of Pat Jordache and Future Songs.
And the outcome? A collection of tracks with thick, heavy vocals, guitar that makes you drool, and percussion that carries the entire album.
I'd love to see how he plays this album live, but since I'm far from the east coast I'll have to wait. But if you're on that coast, Pat Jordache can be seen opening for good friend and past collaborator Merrill Garbus (aka tUnE-yArDs) on the following dates:
5/12 Toronto, ON - The Legendary Horseshoe Tavern
5/14 - New York, NY - Glasslands5/13 Montreal, QC - La Sala Rossa
5/15 Easthampton, MA - Flywheel Arts Collective
5/16 Boston, MA - Brighton Music Hall
