South London producer Palmistry has only just come to our attention via the release of his latest single, "Protector SE5."
Like a lot of people, his first release, "Catch," managed to pass us by, and it makes sense to start there before sharing "Protector SE5" with you shortly. Many among you will have done a double take at seeing dancehall's Popcaan and dubstep's James Blake together in our "Sounds like" section, but that just goes to show the unique sound Palmistry is producing.
Combining slightly moody vocals and atmospherics with more electronic sounds will inevitably draw comparisons with Blake, but Palmistry is the first person to do it using the sounds and rhythms of dancehall. Although it might not seem like a great idea, it sounds fantastic, revealing an emotional depth previously unexplored in the traditionally party-centric sounds of dancehall.
