I always struggle to get back into writing after the holiday season, when I'm take a much needed rest from music. But the first track I review is always fun, a fresh start.
This year's is the premiere of a new tune from Melbourne singer-songwriter Packwood, and that idea of a fresh start actually works in nicely with his music. The single "All Smoke Must Find Its Way" is the first single from Packwood's debut album Vertumnus, a collection of music that touches on each of the four seasons.
"All Smoke Must Find Its Way" commences the season of autumn, and does a great job of providing an auditory version of the feeling that time of year brings. It's a track that really focuses on vocals -- from Packwood's sincere tones to the 14-piece choir who joins in for the choruses. Subtle flourishes of flute and strings alongside withdrawn percussion give this a fullness that does well to build anticipation, especially given the way it cuts off toward the end.
Each season of Vertumnus will be released as a stand-alone EP on the first day of the season that inspired it (in the southern hemisphere) and the one hosting this track, Autumnal, will be released March 1, 2015. This looks to be a very special piece of work.
