The hangnails of '90s alternative can pull you into the underrated side of the genre, where Detroit’s Outrageous Cherry lived in a power pop spindle of songs on lovelorn and self-contemplation for over twenty years, up until Meet You In The Shadows -- their final record release this past October via BURGER Records.
The death of guitarist Larry Ray last year has lead to the disbandment, but “Complicate Me,” the lead single on their posthumous swan song, could not be differentiated from their debut record and in the best way. From beginning to end, the band have never gone stale and hold up a sound filled with '60s proto-punk, space rock and mod rock nods -- in Ray’s emotive guitar solos and Matthew Smith’s echo chamber vocals.
“Complicate Me” continues their tradition of writing jangly love songs, and while their paisley underground contemporaries have drifted off onto other horizons Outrageous Cherry have maintained their motor city might.
