For those who aren't familiar with Australian radio station Triple J's segment "Like A Version," each week a band is asked to perform a song of their choosing live on air. Previously, we've seen things like Grizzly Bear covering Hot Chip, Ben Folds doing the Postal Service, and just last year, Bon Iver performed Anaïs Mitchell's "Coming Down" (which Hannah featured here).
Sometimes bands butcher versions of songs to the point of blasphemy, but today's edition is actually excellent. Triple J hosted Tame Impala (on an Australian national tour currently), and they put together a beautiful cover of Outkast's "Prototype," from the duo's Grammy-winning 2003 album Speakerboxxx / The Love Below.
A great cover, in my opinion, doesn't stray too far from the original, but has definite features of the performing band. I'm sure you'll agree this one was carried out to perfection. From the funky bassline, the Kevin Parker/Nick Allbrook vocal combination, and the throbbing guitar riffs, Tame Impala get my thumbs up.
This just got me remembering how excellent this Outkast album truly was. Big Boi, Andre 3000... where are you? It's been too long.
