Why do we like this?
Melbourne artist (producer/vocalist/songwriter) Oscar Key Sung was responsible for my favorite song of 2013; his incredible single "All I Could Do" is still a regular fixture on my playlist. A talent on the rise for some time now, I was surprised to find out he's still just 23 years old given he burst onto the scene back in 2010 as one-half of the phenomenon that was Oscar + Martin (I'm still holding out for a reunion, guys!). His track record speaks for itself -- he's supported the likes of St. Vincent, Gotye, and Four Tet (plus a raft of festival slots), and was hand-picked by Mercury Music Prize-nominated MC Ghostpoet and Brooklyn-based artist MeLo-X to produce their debut release as MELOGHOST ("WecanWORKitout").
This year starts with a bang for Oscar, with his debut EP Hologram less than a month away. Before this record drops, we've been given another indication of what to expect, with title track and new single "Holograms" now out. While it's a very different vibe to the dance-floor filler "All I Could Do," it's no less potent -- Key Sung has shifted back a number of gears with one of the smoothest slow jams you'll ever come across. His uniquely emotive vocals are a perfect fit for the track's make-up of downtempo beats and shivering synths, resulting in a perfect example of how R&B should be made.
Oscar Key Sung can do no wrong in my eyes, and his music is gaining maturity at an incredible rate. There aren't too many artists in the world that I'm more excited about. Holograms is scheduled for release in Australia/New Zealand on March 3 via Two Bright Lakes.
