Why do we like this?
After the 2010 disbandment of celebrated New Zealand group the Mint Chicks, the Nielson brothers have been busy launching their new projects. You may have heard of Ruben Nielson's Unknown Mortal Orchestra, and Kody Nielson will be releasing his own album, Electric Hawaii, in June. Under the guise of Opossom, Kody has enlisted the assistance of another Mint Chick, Michael Logie, as well as pop singer Bic Runga, a successful New Zealand artist in her own right.
The second single off the album, "Getaway Tonight," gives us a good idea of what's to come from the trio. The similarities to Unknown Mortal Orchestra are definitely there "“ the scuzzy, psychedelic layering, the frantic percussion and the reverbed, distorted vocals. That said, it's kept more of the punk vibe synonymous with the Mint Chicks' sound.
With the success of Unknown Mortal Orchestra, it's not too much of a stretch to see a similar rise to prominence for Opossom. It's refreshing to listen to such innovative and engaging music - Electric Hawaii cannot arrive soon enough.
