Open Swimmer is an up-and-coming band from Melbourne who has just released single “Sugar Bowl” ahead of their debut album. It's junkyard folk, restrained and sparse, yet raw and strong.
I noticed the lyrics first. I'll admit, I'm not a fan of accents in music, so it took a couple of listens to get into this song. Then I noticed the melody – it moves, it twirls, it rises and falls. There's not much going on behind it except for a drumbeat and a couple of thin vocal loops, so it's all eyes on the melody throughout this one.
There's a 'less is more' feel to this track. Space has been used really carefully and the delicate harmonies courtesy of the angel-voiced Martha Brown (you might know her as Banoffee).
What really is a rather simple song has been expertly executed, creating something folky with a serious stomp, a twang and a catchy groove.
Open Swimmer releases their debut album Canyon on October 17!
