The Jazz Diaries is a curious Australian label that debuted in 2013 with Jitwam’s esoteric beat meditations. They present music in a carefully personal manner, giving releases a human touch often missing in others.
Their follow-up to the dusty spirituality of Jitwam is the electronic experimentation of producer Only Rays. The EP is warm and quirky. Reminiscent of late 90s/early 2000s electronic music, Only Rays is not afraid to be earnest with his electro. There are no drops, hi-hat rolls, or ginourmous bass stabs. Still, there is an affection that can draw the listener in.
“Michael Bleach's Ones and Twos” is my favorite. Unabashedly sunny, the track combines keys, percussion, and ephemera into a rhythm my girlfriend described as a Sri Lankan wedding.
