Ballads like this don't come by so often anymore, so I'm really excited that I get to share it with you today.
Opening on a crisp, luscious vocal cadenza, London artist Obenewa's voice is a real delight. Without the protective shield of instruments or serious effects, it's a beautiful way to begin the song. In true Mary J Blige-era style, the melody is soon joined by a full range of vocal harmonies before the slow-jam beat kicks in. This is a stunning, utterly captivating track that doesn't need to rely on tricks or synths to really shine.
Infusing Obenewa's classically trained piano skills with a penchant for the gushing, emotional style of 90s R&B ballads, this has quickly become one of my favorite new songs of the year.
"Solid Gold" follows on from Obenewa's "He," her debut on label Wunderkindimprint. Having sung back-up for Plan B and Rosie Lowe, I think it's safe to say that it's time she shone in her own spotlight.
