Every musical act has to establish a cohesive identity with a unique style and the right balance of technical skill and musical taste. It’s difficult to think of a band right now with more talent and captivating style than Nubiyan Twist. After the success of their astounding 2019 album Jungle Run, the U.K. collective is back with a new single called “Buckle Up” along with news of a forthcoming album entitled Freedom Fables, which is due out February 5 on Strut Records. “Buckle Up” finds the group collaborating with fellow Brit Soweto Kinch on saxophone and vocals, resulting in some predictably awe-inspiring music.
Accompanied by a colorful and somewhat trippy stop-motion animation from the Bristol-based artist Hector K-B, “Buckle Up” features Nubiyan Twist’s typical fiery style with a heavy groove and stellar performances from the band. The track stands out not only for the group’s tasteful display of their talents, but also their nimble blending of live instruments with electronic elements, with each being almost indiscernible from the other at times. Vocalist Nick Richards delivers poignant lyrics about finding ambition to make positive life changes and is later joined by Kinch for a gripping rap verse as well as some scorching sax moments.
For a group with overflowing talent like Nubiyan Twist, the impact of the music is determined largely by how they channel that expertise in creative and accessible ways. “Buckle Up” proves once again that the members of Nubiyan Twist are masters of their craft as well as their musicality. They are absolutely a group to watch in 2021.
