Today marks what would have been Kurt Cobain's 48th birthday, and to celebrate, Pigeons & Planes have complied an album of Nirvana covers.
Taking its name from a lyric contained in "Serve The Servants," Teenage Angst Has Paid Off Well contains a host of up-and-coming artists interpreting Nirvana classics, none more strange and compelling than Glass Gang's take on "Smells Like Teen Spirit."
Slowing things right down, the track is almost unidentifiable. Spooky synths and rolling percussion dominate, while the hushed, distorted vocals are lost in the hazy mix. If you hear this without any knowledge that it's a Nirvana cover you'd most likely think it's a Glass Gang original.
Whether this is a good thing or not is debatable, but as big fan of Glass Gang, I find this cover to be a huge risk that pays off.
