Why do we like this?
As much as I like to think I know a whole lot about the Australian music scene, I am honest enough to admit when an artist slips past me. Sydney's Nicole Millar is a perfect example of this lapse, but I'm here to rectify my tardiness -- better late than never, huh? It's not that I wasn't aware of her (I've even covered a track she's featured on: Cosmo's Midnight's "Phantasm"), I just didn't realize she'd released a number of her own tracks, including her most recent single "Taken."
Teaming up with Canadian producer XNDRJ (check out his SoundCloud for some serious grooves), Millar is onto a winner here (or was, when "Taken" was released back in December -- sorry guys!). A superb track, the collaborators have done a perfect job of pairing Millar's lingering, sultry vocals with smooth, watery layers of synth and percussion. The result is totally addictive, a great example of how electronic R&B should be done.
After being featured on a bunch of tracks with talented local and international producers (Peking Duk, Emoh Instead, Sun Glitters, and Allday), a Nicole Millar EP is on the horizon. In the meantime, make sure to check out her previous releases over on SoundCloud. I promise I'll keep you up to date with her new music in the future.
