Nicholas Allbrook is a name you might not be familiar with. One of Australia's most enigmatic and talented musicians, he's also one of the hardest working, with a resume as long as any: POND fronthuman, founding member of Mink Mussel Creek, ex-Tame Impala bass-player, one half of Allbrook/Avery, drummer with Peter Bibby... you get the picture.
Allbrook's solo project is now ready to launch, and his first official single is "100 k's 'round Carmel." While there's definitely a hint of his other projects, this one's pure Allbrook, which means plenty of eclectic, interesting psych rock and those unmistakably high-pitched, soul-searching vocals. There's such a cool, twisted groove to this one, I'm instantly reminded of an Ariel Pink or Connan Mockasin jam.
His nine-track debut album, Ganough, Wallis and Fatuna, will be released on September 5 via Spinning Top Records. I am predicting interesting things from this one.
