Yacht made waves (pun intentional) a couple of days ago when they faked a sex-tape leak to promote their new video for their song "I Want To Fuck You Til I Die," but today they've issued a real apology and acknowledged that it was fucked up.
Here's a rough timeline of the events. Its kind of confusing:
6th April: Frontwoman Claire L. Evans emails a Gawker Media writer stating the band's plans to fake the sex tape leak
9th May: Yacht issue huge (now deleted) Facebook post about how their privacy was violated and that a sex-tape of theirs has been posted online. They also create a fake download for the tape and ask for $5 (no one actually got charged). Various outlets write about it, most comment on the fact that seemingly only Yacht's famous friends can download it, and that this is suspect.
10th May: Jezebel writer Anna Merlan is forwarded the email from 6th of April and writes an updated article condemning Yacht. Yacht post an unconvincing explanation of the stunt (now deleted).
11th May: Now that their career is in danger, Yacht write an actual apology.
An excerpt from the apology:
Yes, this was all a “hoax” or “PR stunt,” and one we were so excited to share. While there is inherent deception in pulling a hoax, it was never our intention to mock or make light of anyone who has been a victim of a privacy violation like the one we mentioned. This was a lazy starting point for what we wanted to be a much more fun story about the expectations of a sex tape and the frenzy surrounding the taboo of sex, especially juxtaposed with our own non-celebrity. We failed to tell that story. Instead we told a much darker and more disturbing story.
Have a read of the full thing below.
The band have decided to release their music video anyway.
They also said sorry for the non-apology they issued yesterday, when they "clearly didn't get it."
