Vic Mensa performed a new song at REVOLT’s #JusticeForFlint event on Sunday night.
Mensa debuted the track entitled 16 Shots, which was dedicated to the young black teen Laquan McDonald, who was brutally shot 16 times by police in 2014.
Mensa has also been a vocal supporter for Flint’s search for justice after the water supply there had been subjected to significant lead contamination for almost two years.
The event was created by Creed director Ryan Coogler to support the struggling community. “The benefit event we will give a voice to the members of the community who were the victims of the choices of people in power who are paid to protect them, as well as provide them with a night of entertainment, unity, and emotional healing,” Coogler said in a statement.
Mensa’s new track that honors the death of then-17-year-old McDonald, who was shot 16 times in 13 seconds by a police officer. The footage of the incident was released last year and sparked international outrage. At the time, Mensa posted a message on his Twitterpage declaring that “we want justice for Laquan and we want justice for our people."
