We’ve heard of people forgetting Tasmania (the southern state and small island beneath Australia) is actually part of the country, but it’s not so often that we hear of people muddling Australia with her neighbouring country, New Zealand. But that’s exactly what rapper The Game did on Saturday, missing his set at Raggamuffin Festival in Auckland.
New Zealand fans were left disappointed, with some annoyed that the festival failed to inform or adequately explain the rapper’s lack of appearance. “We honestly believed The Game would honor his obligations to our festival and it was only when we had our people at the airport on Saturday to pick him up to play Raggamuffin IX did we find out that he did not board the plane to Dubai,” said the festival’s director Andrew McManus on social media.
However, the confusion continued when The Game (real name Jayceon Terrell Taylor) later posted on Facebook that he hadn’t missed his flight at all, but had rather been “denied entry” by Auckland’s customs. What he failed to mention was that he was actually denied entry by Australian customs, seeing as he arrived in Australia – not New Zealand – with (you guessed it) only a New Zealand visa. The Australian Associated Press (via NZ Herald) reported that Australian security officials told the artist and his crew to leave Australia immediately because he had no legal visa to stay in the country.
And so, The Game's entire Aus/NZ tour was cancelled before it even began.
This is the third time The Game has missed a New Zealand show, after failing to appear at the Roc tha Block festival in 2007 and a Powerstation show in 2013.
Raggamuffin, Auckland’s popular festival of international Reggae and hip-hop music, has made up for the incident by recommending ticket holders keep their tickets to use for a 20% discount on entry to any of The Game shows when he tours in September.
Here’s hoping he doesn’t muddle his countries again.
