Legendary hip-hop trio Run-DMC will be the recipients of the revered Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
Along with the Queens-born trio, Grammy Lifetime Achievement awards will also go to Ruth Brown, Celia Cruz, Earth Wind & Fire, Jefferson Airplane, Herbie Hancock, John Cage and Linda Ronstadt.
Rev Run, aka Joseph Simmons, excitedly announced the news via Twitter:
It's another huge moment for hip-hop recognition, following the recent announcement that N.W.A will be inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame this year.
Run-DMC were the first hip-hop group to ever see an album go gold, with the release of their self-titled debut in 1984, and were the first rap group to ever be nominated for a Grammy. They were also the first rap group to earn platinum and multi-platinum records, the first to have a video air on MTV, the first to grace the cover of Rolling Stone, and more. This marks their first ever Grammy award.
The ceremony, as part of the 58th Annual Grammy Awards, will take place next month on Monday, February 15. The full awards ceremony will be aired from 8 pm on CBS.
It's safe to say that their influence can be felt on a tangible level, every day. With hip-hop now one of the biggest and most influential musical genres in history, none of it would have been possible without Run-DMC doing it first.
