Last year, Kendrick Lamar revealed in a Rolling Stone interview that he went to Minnesota with Prince during the recording of To Pimp A Butterfly, but what the two musicians spent time doing didn't end up on the album's final cut. Lamar said of the experience:
"I didn't trip over getting a song done. I really appreciate the actual game he was giving me," and that he admired how Prince "took control of his music."
Now, in a new interview ahead of the Grammys, the rapper and his To Pimp A Butterfly (nominated for eleven awards) collaborators have confirmed that the original idea was to have The Purple One sing the hook on "Complexion (A Zulu Love)." Rapsody, the track's other featured artist, broke the news, to which Lamar replied:
"That's true. Prince heard the record, loved the record and the concept of the record got us to talking. We got to a point where we were just talking in the studio and the more time that passed we realized we weren't recording anything. We just ran out of time, it's as simple as that."
The Grammy Awards ceremony takes place on February 15th, and you can check out all the nominations, including the eleven To Pimp A Butterfly has recieved here.
