When Bonnaroo announced its 2016 lineup back in January, it included The Claypool Lennon Delirium. It was unclear the band's direction until a few days later when they released the song "Cricket and the Genie." The eight minute track immediately kicks off with a bass riff synonymous with the Primus frontman, Les Claypool. Sean Lennon takes lead vocals on the tracks and at time's sounds identical to his father.
Today, the group has announced their debut album, Monolith of Phobos, will be released on June 3. The album is available for preorder on the band's website. They will then embark on a United States tour the following day. Full dates can be found below.
The Claypool Lennon Delirium has also shared another track from the album, "Mr. Wright."
The pair met when Lennon’s Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger was opening for Primus and Dinosaur Jr. on a tour last summer. After a number of backstage jam sessions, Claypool invited Lennon on stage for “Southbound Pachyderm” and was blown away by his guitar playing ability.
“I realized that this fella had some chops,” the bassist told Rolling Stone. “Primus was about to take some time off and I was gearing up a new project so I asked Sean if he’d like to come to Rancho Relaxo and see if we couldn’t get some interesting sounds on tape. Next thing I know he’s staying in my guesthouse over the holidays and we’re drinking vino, hunting mushrooms and throwing musical pasta at the walls.”
"Sean is a musical mutant after my own heart," said Claypool in a press release. "He definitely reflects his genetics – not just the sensibilities of his dad but also the abstract perspective and unique approach of his mother. It makes for a glorious freak stew."
"It’s been an honor and a challenge playing with someone of Les’ caliber, but luckily the Gods of Pinot Noir shone favorably down and granted us a bundle of devilish tunes about monkeys, outer space and sexual deviancy," added Lennon.
