The I Don't Cares, side project of Replacements' frontman Paul Westerberg and alt singer-songwriter Juliana Hatfield, have just released a brand new "music video" for track "Whole Lotta Nothin'." The two joined forces in October of last year and have since released an album entitled Wild Stab.
In the classic Replacements-eque style, "Whole Lotta Nothin'" is a music video in name only. It feels like an elementary school poorly framed iMovie slideshow for most of it, but the other bits make it worth it. It opens and closes with alter ego “Dale” Westerberg hilariously teaching us how to write a song, which of course involves lighting a cigarette before any further steps can be taken.
Releasing a song called “Whole Lotta Nothin’” under the band name The I Don’t Cares is a statement in itself. The self-deprecation forces the listener to strip themselves of expectations, and maintains the untouchable quality of The Replacements legendary frontman Paul Westerberg, this time teamed with the amazing Juliana Hatfield.
