Updated (13/12/2017): MGMT is a band that people have come to know and love, but some just aren't 100% sure what their name means. With the release of the band's new album Little Dark Age around the corner, it's about time that the meaning of the band's alias is clear. MGMT is an acronym of the word 'management.' It is also the acronym for 'Methyl Guanine Methyl Transferase'; important for genome stability. And while MGMT may be extremely concerned with genome stability, the band's name is actually based off of the former rather than the latter. 

MGMT New Album 2017 Little Dark Age

Since 2013's self-titled album MGMT, the band have yet to release new music – making the anticipation stronger with each passing year. In 2015, they released a statement that went along the lines of 'MGMT re-dominates your mind hole in 2016' which they then corrected, saying that they meant 2017. In 2016 they again said that they would be returning with new music. And now, still in 2017, they have gone so far as to tease us with new music on their social media platforms. 

2017's teasers from MGMT started in May via a video uploaded to their Instagram. The caption read: "We want you to be excited. Here's a "making of" teaser video by @avidmacnutt to wet your whistles with audio visual scraps from the germination of the forthcoming album LITTLE DARK AGE"

In June, the band Tweeted a photo of a CD titled 'album mastering' signifying that the new album was complete.

Following this, in October, the band teased new music for Little Dark Age on both Twitter & Instagram.

MGMT Little Dark Age Release Date

In an article on The New Yorker, there was confirmation of the release date being February 2018. Two singles have been released off the album, "Little Dark Age" and "When You Die," which you can listen to below in anticipation for the full album.
