ODESZA has become known over the last few years for incorporating all kinds of musical styles in a unique electronic blend of their own. Whether you want to daydream away behind your desk or want to get ready for a night out, their songs seems to fit any situation, testament to which is the fact that their 2014 album In Return has reached the Billboard top spot no less than three times since its release. When I heard they were playing a 15 minute train ride from my home, I had my mind set: I want to witness these guys live. Without having seen any previous live footage of the tour, and without having been to the relatively new venue they were playing (TivoliVredenburg), I went in completely blank.
The show was fully sold out, meaning a solid 2000 people attended the show on this Friday night, April 1st. I was happily surprised by the already packed venue when I entered, with the last of two support acts playing. Not sure where to position myself, I wandered around briefly to pick a good spot. While the present balcony provided a great view over the stage and the many people below, I decided to mingle with the crowd on the ground floor to get the best feeling.
The performance started right on time. Supported by the brass sound of a trombonist and trumpetist the first big hits of the drums by ODESZA gained everyones full attention and focus. After this energetic introduction, the duo turned to a couple of their more mellow tracks, including a personal favorite of mine: "How Did I Get Here". During the rest of the show they continued this pleasant variation of softer and harder tracks, building up to a strong grand finale. Time flew by, and before I knew the show was already over. Luckily, we were treated with some additional minutes of music after the crowd requested an encore.
Besides the music, the visuals accompanying the music seemed to impress a lot of people (including myself). Everything from abstract figures and images to skulls to Godzilla passed by on the large screen at the background of the stage and made for an impressive sight in combination with the lights.
I really enjoyed the show and the energy it gave me, and so did many others with me considering the many happy faces. ODESZA continues their tour the next few months. Make sure to check if they're visiting a place near you and go see them perform if you can!
