May 6th, 2016 not only marked the day that Canadian wunderkind Kaytranada released his debut album, it also happened to be the day that he performed in Amsterdam. Having followed him for quite a while now, I was really looking forward to hearing his tunes live.
Knowing Kaytranada would start a bit later on the evening, I still wanted to be there on time to catch the support acts spinning. I wasn't the only one with that idea, as the venue started to fill up nicely early on. First up was fellow Dutchman Wantigga, who delivered a nice and pleasant mixture of tracks to warm up to. Later on, Kaytra's little brother Lou Phelps got the crowd jumping already.
At around 10.45 PM it was time for the Canadian producer himself to go behind the boards and display his skills. It should be of no surprise that he played the songs from his new album, but he definitely threw in the tracks we got to know him from. Especially his Janet Jackson - If remix seemed to do well.
His music is just perfect to get comfortable and gently move to the chill tunes coming from the speakers, and that was exactly what happened. The fact that the temperature was slowly rising during the performance did not seem to bother anyone, as the floor was covered with sweaty and happy people. A good sign if you ask me.
Overall I can say I really enjoyed the evening, and everyone else around me seemed to share that feeling. Were we hoping for something extra special because of the release of his album? Perhaps. Was it necessary? Not really.
Check out Kaytranada's debut album 99.9% out on Spotify or but it via iTunes. It is worth it, trust me.
