Lauryn Hill has teamed with TIDAL for a surprise music and art festival taking place April 13th through 15th. The festival, called Diaspora Calling, is taking place at Kings Theatre in Brooklyn and is featuring artists and musicians from Africa and the African diaspora.

Today was opening day, and the festival kicked off with a gallery opening and art show. The music festival portion of the event begins tomorrow, and will include international musicians such as Stephen Marley, Stonebwoy, and Machel Montano. On Friday, Lauryn Hill herself will conclude the festival with a live performance.

Of the event, Hill remarked:

“Diaspora Calling! is a collection of works intended to celebrate the rich tapestry of artists from the African Diaspora while also illumining persistent and irrepressible themes... Even if we work independently, we are a resounding collective voice, both reconciling and embracing our relationship to history, our origins, our future and to ourselves.”
