It's a hairy situation in Dallas this weekend. A four inch lock of John Lennon’s hair has just been sold for a whopping $35,000. Garry Schrum, of Heritage Auctions, said the lock was “a good size with quite a lot of strands,” and was from “a very important time in his career.” It dates back to 1966, when Lennon cut his infamous mop top for his role in the film How I Won the War. Lennon played the role of Private Gripweed, where he would first don the signature round glasses he would wear for the rest of his life. German hairdresser Klaus Baruck pocketed the mop top locks from Lennon’s Hamburg salon visit.

The hair went to bidder Paul Fraser, a UK-based Beatles memorabilia collector.

“This is the largest lock of John Lennon’s hair ever offered at auction and this world record price is a lasting testament to the world’s more than 50-year love affair and fascination with Lennon and the Beatles,” Schrum added.

The nearly fifty-year-old lock was sold Saturday at Dallas’ Heritage Auctions. Other Beatles memorabilia sold included a photo of Lennon taken shortly before his hair cut ($2125,) a photo of the band signed by all four members ($42,500) and an unused ticket from their first ever show in the USA in 1964, which sold for $30,000.
