Three million records and seven years later, Jack White's Third Man Records is launching a "space proof" turntable into space, strapped to a balloon. July 30th will see the launch, coupled with events at the label's stores in Nashville and Detroit.

Who knew Jack White was so Elon Musky? Well, hold up. Thanks are due to Kevin Carrico and Students and Teachers in Near Space for enabling Third Man to celebrate their anniversary in such outlandish style. The vehicle that will allow this spinning bit of plastic to ascend into space is called the Icarus Craft. Mind you, the record won't be your average 12" plastic; rather, a gold-plated version.

You might be wondering: "what song suits such a historic musical occasion"? None other than "A Glorious Dawn" by Carl Sagan. The track features Stephen Hawking saying things like "If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe."

Nearly four years after the White Stripes front man told Buzz Aldrin about this project, it's finally come to fruition. That's pretty cool Jack, but how the hell are you going to get that thing down?
