It’s been 14 years since J Dilla’s vocal album The Diary was originally set for release. Now the long-lost album will finally be available this week on April 15th.
Leading up to that release, Mass Appeal Records shared a collaborative track which features J Dilla and Nas trading verses to a beat provided by Madlib. Available as an iTunes exclusive bonus track on The Diary, J Dilla originally recorded "The Sickness" in 2001, with Nas contributing additional vocals in 2016.
In a statement, Nas shows his gratitude for taking part in the collaboration:
May J Dilla continue to Rest in Power in Hip Hop Heaven for eternity. Honored to play a part in his works and honored to be a part of this song. He shines down on us with while we get to enjoy his Diary Of J Dilla album. His word ring loud on this one. Salute to all those who collaborated on this piece. Salute to Detroit and his family.
Pay Jay Productions explains, “The Diary is the final batch of unissued material that Dilla had assembled for release during his lifetime.” The album will feature 14 tracks with vocal performances by J Dilla, Snoop Dogg, and Kenny Wray, with production by Madlib, Pete Rock, Nottz, and Hi-tek.
J Dilla’s The Diary is set to be released April 15 via Mass Appeal Records and Pay Jay Productions.
