Kudu Blue are the Brighton based indie-electronic outfit responsible for tracks like "Vicinity" and "Call Out" that have been grabbing my attention lately. Their sound is a seamless blend of electronic and R&B, influenced by a multitude of artists from varying genres and eras. I was able to ask them a few questions about the project. If you're not familiar with the artist, read on to acquaint yourself!

First of all how are you?

Kudu Blue: Very well, thanks for asking!

For those who aren't familiar with Kudu Blue, can you tell us a bit about how the project began?

We've been good friends for years and had all been making music within various projects for a while. Tom and Owen had been working for a while as a production duo and Clem went over for a session, the end result was "Bones." It was after writing that track that we got Creeda and Dale on board and started Kudu Blue.

It seems your sound is a blend of old-school influences with new-school techniques, who are some of your biggest influences of the past and present?

Oh nice, thanks! Our influences are all pretty varied. Everything from Massive Attack to Fela Kuti, Michael Jackson and Radiohead, could go on forever really. We love music from all genres, some of the artists we're admiring at the moment are Flying Lotus, Maribou State, Badbadnotgood and James Blake (to name a few).

Adding to that, how has your sound changed or developed since the inception of Kudu Blue?

When we started there was no real aim as to how we wanted our music to sound as such, we were just making music that we all enjoyed playing. Over the past 18 months our sound has definitely evolved, it's now becoming more a reflection of all of our influences and the product of the time we have spent as a group playing and writing.

You've just released your single "Call Out," what's the story behind this one?

It came about at a rehearsal we had back in March, we started jamming and the song came together within a couple of hours. We'd previously started recording another track which was going to be our next release but "Call Out" just felt right.

Can you describe your writing process?

We don't have a process as such, each of our tracks is written in it's own way, Call Out started from a synth loop that Owen wrote and we built upon it from that. Sometimes we'll just start jamming as a group until something clicks, sometimes Clem will bring in lyrics and a melody, we'll just go with what feels and sounds good. The one thing that is consistent with each song we make is that we like spend a lot of time delving into the track, fine tuning and adding in the little tasty bits.

You've been slowly releasing singles for the past year, when can we expect an EP or even a full length album anytime soon (fingers crossed)?

Singles have worked nicely for us so far. There aren't any concrete plans as yet but putting together a bigger body of work is definitely something that is on the horizon.

Thanks guys! Keep an eye out for this up-and-coming artist, and check out their track "Vicinity" below.
