Christa Vi's team gave us a shout to check out her Loveblind EP, and it just so happened that one of the producers that consistently inspires me to push boundaries in everything I do took part in the project.
So rather than doing a formal Q&A, it seemed to make more sense to chat with Fybe:One regarding some of the things and artists that inspire him.
Be sure to check out Fybe:One's remix of Christa Vi's "Loveblind."
Things that inspire Fybe:One…
Decay - Sounds morbid, but the way materials break down and decompose has always intrigued me— often creating something both beautiful and unpleasant. This applies to sound too, I like to mess up sounds and resample them so get the unique glitches and nuances. I used to (and very occasionally these days!) paint graffiti and I used to enjoy seeing what happened to the images over time as different layers are applied and then stripped back.
Juxtaposition - I think the idea of combining opposite elements together features in both my music and my design. Combining the natural with the digital, my artwork often uses geometry and sharp precision next to plants / animals / natural textures. In my music I like to multi-layer a section until it gets very full and loud and switch to a moment of silence or calm. This works in so many ways throughout my work.
Harps - I am still (since creating my first EP 'Harp' in 2011) drawn to the sound of the harp and always have been. It definitely has a magical, fluid quality to the sound.
Friends - I'm lucky enough to be surrounded by talented people, photographers / DJs / painters / skateboarders / singers / producers... who constantly raise the bar, inspire and push me to improve my work to keep up.
Biro! - Yep, the humble biro is my weapon of choice for drawing. And it has to be one of the crappy, standard Bic ones too. It is actually an incredibly versatile tool for drawing, sketching and shading.
Artists that inspire Fybe:One…
Charles Murdoch - I might be a little late to the party here, but I got into his production on his recently released Point LP and it's still getting a lot of airtime here. It has a lot of variety, some sounding fit for the dance floor, and some tracks fitting more into a traditional 'song' format, but all interesting and very well produced.
Shuggie Otis - I've been getting inspired by a lot of old psychedelic rock / blues and jazz. They didn't have all the technology at their fingertips like us, but managed to create some really interesting stuff. Some of it is also great for sampling. Shuggie has made loads of different sounding music but well worth a dig through his archives.
Leon Vynehall - Leon is doing it right! His latest EP is danceable, but also not too repetitive and so well produced. The shuffle on his drums always makes me wanna move, and his use of vocal snippets is pretty original. If you don't have Rojus yet, go grab it.
MED - He has released an LP alongside Blu and Madlib recently, but his flow always gets me nodding. I'm no expert on rapping, but the way he uses breaks and off beats always grabs my attention, and I always look forward to his verse on a track.
Maribou State - They have been on top of their game for ages and are so consistently good it makes me jealous! They're also combining the electronic production with an organic, human element by using live drums and instruments in their sound. Not only is their production incredible, but they also have impeccable taste. Their mixes are on most days in the office I work in.
