Producer Flying Lotus stopped by on Pharrell and Scott Vener’s Beats 1 program OTHERtone today, where they discussed about the current state of hip-hop.

Vener started off the show by posing a question to Flying Lotus about the trends in hip hop in the present day.

“Do you think hip-hop is in a good place right now, like lyricist-wise?” he asked.

“Yeah, absolutely,” Lotus replied, “Here's the good part—there's room for everybody now. You can be super lyrical, or you can just ride the beat barely rhyming, and it's all good. As long as the beats hitting you’re all good.”

Before Pharrell declared that “every generation” was essentially critical of the one younger than them that would shape the new sounds of the future. “It’s rare that things are timeless though” he concluded.

“You’ve just got to go back in history,” Pharrell said when he was asked about how the new generation’s music will be looked at in years’ time. “Don’t you remember when they wanted to burn disco? They hated disco but it took over. But you’ve seen that a million times, like with the counterculture as well. They became the coolest thing then 80’s people were hating on the hippies.”

We’re living in a time where there’s some major transition. It feels a little weird but it’s kind of awesome. It’s just called change.”
