With the release of Flume's Sophomore album Skin imminent Flume made a cameo appearance on Zane Lowe's show during an interview with Beck to discuss the process behind their collaboration "Tiny Cities," for the upcoming album.
There's something really cool about hearing an inventive and widely respected singer-songwriter like Beck praising one of electronic music's biggest young stars. While there seems to be a constant debate about the soul of music or the lack thereof in electronic music, it's impressive for Flume to get that stamp of approval and for Beck to be sort of passing the torch to a new generation.
Beck praised Flume's organic approach to producing, saying that "Sometimes when people come to new technologies there's a stiffness to it that's a little rigid ... what he does with these programs is so fluid and natural sounding."
In addition to a little insight into the process of their working together they also premiered "Tiny Cities," an anthemic track with Beck's voice building on top of big, atmospheric drums and synths into a poignant pseudo drop/ pseudo chorus. It very much feels like Flume and Beck brought together in an organic way. Check out their conversation and the track below.
