Entering its' 25th anniversary, 12th year in Chicago and 1st year boasting four days, Lollapalooza's home-field fest lands with a thud in Grant Park this weekend. Birthed as a farewell concert for Jane's Addiction, even frontman and founder Perry Farrell has come to deride what's become of his former jewel.

Sure, there's an undeniable quality of a festival with Radiohead at the top of the bill, and plenty of fine acts to be found throughout, but we have to question the necessity of a 4th day led by non-headliners J. Cole and Lana Del Rey, a completely irrelevant Chili Peppers, and boring LCD cash-grab reunion. All told, there's barely a day's worth of acts to be excited for, and I make that judgement based solely on previous lineups.

With Kanye West making a surprise appearance at Drake & Future's co-headlining concert at Chicago's United Center Wednesday night before the fest, the most exciting prospect of the weekend has to be further surprises from 'Ye. The greatest opportunities likely being, again, Future's Friday night set, or Vic Mensa's (should-be-headlining) spot at the Pepsi stage Saturday, where the city's own Chance the Rapper could be another likely guest.

Much like the current state of music, the true relevance behind this festival is weighted in its' rap and hip-hop acts, with plenty of potential for a legendary weekend.
