Drip is a subscription music platform that allows for independent artists and labels to self-release their own content, and also creates a community of artists and music-lovers. Last month, the company announced that they were shutting down, but not before paying artists and labels in full (a noble gesture). But now it looks like Drip is being saved by Kickstarter, the site that allows people from all walks of life to “kickstart” their own projects whether they are music albums, technological inventions, or items of clothing.

Drip is the first platform to be acquired by Kickstarter, and the company posted a statement on its site describing how the acquisition of Drip would affect Kickstarter.

So how does this change things? In some ways, not at all. Our commitment to serving creators is hardcoded into our missions, and will continue to guide us. In other ways, we’re excited to discover where it leads. Miguel [from Drip - not the actual Miguel] will join the team here at Kickstarter. Together we’ll all be able to serve creators, creativity, and our communities more powerfully. This is just the beginning.

In many aspects, Drip and Kickstarter seemed to be of the same nature - creators enjoy closer connections to the people who help sustain their work, and these fans receive special benefits. With respect to Drip, these benefits would include early access to new releases, rare tracks, visual art, exclusive videos, writing, and more. With their new relations to Kickstarter, the list of benefits should (hopefully) continue to grow.
