Coachella Weekend 2 is well underway and the California festival turned purple in remembrance of Prince, who died on Thursday at the age of 57. Numerous artists paid tribute to Minnesota music icon, some by covering well beloved tracks and others sharing condolences during their set.
Soul singer Mavis Staples, who was previously signed to Prince’s Paisley Park record label, performed an a cappella version of “Purple Rain”s chorus. As stated by Billboard, Staples endearingly informed the crowd, “Yesterday, I lot a dear friend – my son. I’m talking about Prince. He was my angel” and followed with a moment of silence.
An the list goes on.
Rapper Joey Bada$$ paid tribute by performing with “The Love Symbol” on stage and playing a snippet “1999”.
Headlining act LCD Soundsystem honored Prince with a “Controversy” cover, accompanied by an entirely purple-lit stage. Watch fan footage here.
Additional performers who paid their respects included Jack U, Gallant, Jhene Aiko, and Ellie Goulding.
The festival itself also honored Prince with three of their jumbo screens projecting his 2008 Coachella gig, including the iconic performance of Radiohead’s “Creep,” and ended with the quote, “From now on, this is Prince’s House." Their trademark multicolored palm trees also glowed purple, and throughout the festival the hue was visible to the thousands of attendees.
Coachella closes out tomorrow, April 24th, with more Prince tributes undoubtedly expected from Sunday performers.
