It’s been two years since Bombay Bicycle Club released their last album, but fans are going to have to wait a bit longer for anything further to come...as a group, at least.
This past week, the band released a statement via Twitter, confirming that they aren't presently working on new music and don’t intend to release new music any time soon. But before you go into panic mode, it also emphasized that they are not breaking-up. I repeat: this is NOT a breakup, but a necessary hiatus. Or so they say.
The reason behind the extended time off stems from ten years of prioritizing the band as their sole focus. Lead singer + multi instrumentalist, Jack Steadman, and guitarist, Jamie MacCall, began writing and playing music together at the age of fifteen. And by sixteen, the two established Bombay Bicycle Club alongside bassist Ed Nash and drummer Suren De Saram. Fast forward to 2016, with a decade’s worth of hard work and a multitude of catchy electronic, indie rock jams, all four members agreed to put a pause on BBC to independently pursue different career paths.
Bombay expressed, “We aren’t breaking up, but after ten years of doing this – and it being the only thing we’ve known since the age of 16 – we thought it was time for all of us to try something else.”
There’s been previous speculation of a possible break-up, over the past few months. With questions over their latest album title, So Long, See You Tomorrow, and no live appearances since July of 2015, fans were worried the band has been on the road to extinction for a while. But the statement put these faulty rumors to rest by clarifying the strength of the their relationship; “For a band that has been together for such a long time, we are all still incredibly close and probably get on even better than we did when we started the band.”
So we can all give a sigh of relief. But the only remaining questions is: If not as a band, when will hear any of their new, independent music???
Well Jack, Jamie, Ed and Suren aren’t ones to disappoint. Jack and Ed are already working on their own solo albums, Jamie is going behind the scenes to give the music management business a run for their money, and Suren will grace our ears with wondrous jazz tunes.
So it won't be long before we see more from them. I guess you can say “It’s alright now, I don’t wanna wait.” **ba dum tss**
