Hip-hop duo Run The Jewels, comprised of rapper Killer Mike and rapper/producer El-P, took the stage at Coachella with a little help from Senator Bernie Sanders.
“One of the highlights of running for president over the course of this last year has been getting to know Killer Mike,” Sanders announced through a video introduction before Run The Jewels’ set. He also mentioned his wish to get to know El-P better.
The Democratic presidential hopeful also acknowledged Killer Mike’s knowledge and commitment to social issues as aspects he receives inspiration from.
Killer Mike is an outspoken advocate of social justice issues, appearing on news programs and late night television to speak on events such as the Ferguson shooting and the Baltimore riots. On The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, he elucidated a solution to improving race relations.
“Find a child who is marginal or doing exceptional in school—who is a minority, who doesn’t look like you, not of the same religion, not of the same background—help that child matriculate into college,” he said. “Teach them the path you were taught to help them become a successful human being.”
The Atlanta native is also a known support of Sander’s presidential run, supporting the Vermont senator on the campaign trail. In February, he released a six-part video interview with Sanders in which they discuss economic and social issues.
