Usually when bands disband and fade into oblivion, it's assumed they will stay there, especially when it's been ten plus years. Neutral Milk Hotel has forcefully meandered back into the limelight defying all of our expectations. Over the past few weeks or so, they have been releasing a number of re-recorded tracks from previous albums
-- that's "unreleased versions" for the OCD ones out there.
I'm really only intimately familiar with "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea" by this band. They were quite popular in the 90s with indie-cult followers, but to be quite honest I was probably in my room practicing "Da Dip" with Freak Nasty. That being said, I am very happy to acquaint myself with this unreleased version of "You've Passed" from a long-standing band like NMH.
Frontman Jeff Mangum has this awfully brilliant and whiny voice that would cut straight through any monstrous hangover, sour yet irrefutably unique. Believe me, you will not be mistaking this homie's voice for someone else, EVER. The lyrics, which read as beautiful poetry, are backed up by a heavy, fuzzy melody consistent throughout the track. I'm almost more enamored by the lyrics (pasted below for your reading pleasure) as literature than music, it's so well written.
November 22, 2011 will find an entire set of unreleased vinyl only box set of 15 newly-released NMH songs for a mere $88... plus shipping, of course. Cult fans, get your credit cards ready. What's a little debt for artist love?
The lady is dying
She bends back like a wave
As her spirit is climbing
Through the hospital wall and away
And I wanted to hold you
As you made your escape
But now I should have told you
When your eyes were alive and awake
Always in life we all must make this mistake
And so I go it alone
And the pressure is great
I hold on to my own
Oh please oh don't go away
I wanted to know you
Before you started to fade
But I gave everything to
A lie and a farce and a fake
