Why do we like this?
Nas' 1994 debut Illmatic could be featured in its entirety as an Old School Wednesday playlist, but in the end I decided to opt for just one song. "The World Is Yours" wins, with honorable mentions for "Represent" and "Memory Lane."
With all-time legend Pete Rock on the beat, this was always likely to be a successful hook up, but it's doubtful the two of them realized what an enduring hip-hop classic the track would become.
A delightfully simple yet catchy piano melody and some of the most intelligent lyricism heard in hip hop are what sets this track apart - and that's before we've even got onto the hook Pete Rock vocals in the chorus. After this, the world was most definitely Nas's.
