Why do we like this?
I love many kinds of music, but soul music holds a special place in my heart. It's funky enough without being erratic. It's intimate and personal. It lacks pretention. Sometimes, I'll get stuck on a particular tune for days, literally playing it on loop for hours in the car, on the turntable, or on the diminutive laptop speakers Apple refuses to upgrade. It's like a spell.
A couple of years ago, I stumbled onto this song, "I Can't Let You Get Away," from Myron & E with The Soul Investigators, a name that sounded like it was from several decades prior. I was instantly hooked. It had drums that cried out to be sampled, a sweeping string arrangement, and a lead singer that sang perfectly imperfect, pouring his heart over the music. Slowly I came to find out the record wasn't an oldie, it had just been recorded by the Bay Area-based group in Finland, and it was the B-side of a 7" release, Cold Game, by Egon Alapatt's Now Again label (a subsidiary of Stones Throw).
I recently relapsed on this tune because I'm hearing that Myron & E are prepping a full-length album for Stones Throw, a piece of news that made me downright giddy. This is the kind of music I would recommend to everyone and anyone.
