Why do we like this?
When you think of the late 80s/early 90s Seattle grunge scene, your mind probably doesn't instantly jump to the likes of Mudhoney. While they might not have seen the commercial success of bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam, they have influenced generations of alternative rockers with their brash take on rock and roll.
Recently, Mudhoney released their ninth album, Vanishing Point. It's kind of hard to believe that a gruff, nonconforming alternative rock band like Mudhoney could stick around after all these years while so many of their peers have fallen. But here they are, still as pissed off and aggressive as they were when they were just starting their musical careers.
The track "Chardonnay" really showcases the angst that Mudhoney has been famous for as they rail against pop culture via chardonnay wine. Fueled by distorted, punked out guitars and Mark Arm's snarky lyrics, "Chardonnay" makes you want to go and grab the nearest bottle of wine and smash it over the nearest yuppie. It's reminiscent of songs from the Stooges and the Sex Pistols, where louder and faster is always better.
Mudhoney proves that even after 25 years of making music, they can still operate on their own terms as they continue to thrash their way through uncompromising music that makes them happy.
