Why do we like this?
Denaun Porter is an unsung hero. The Detroit producer and beatmaker has had the privilege of studying under great producers like J Dilla and Dr. Dre, as well as having the mentorship of legends like Proof. After years spent humbly in the shadows perfect his manifestation, Denaun Porter is finally blooming in public.
The sole producer of Eminem's Infinite, the EP that begun a musical and pop culture phenomenon, Denaun has spent thousands of hours mastering his instrument: the drum machine. His years as a producer for Dr. Dre's Aftermath Productions saw him land high-profile placements with cats like 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg, G-Unit, and others, but Mr. Porter never got blinded by the limelight. A Detroit native through and through, Porter always kept a working relationship with several talented but underrated artists from the D. The skilled producer also heavily invested in a transient rhymer named Jay Electronica that was living in Detroit almost a decade ago. Still, for all his pedigree there and experience, Porter has hesitated to step out as a solo artist in his own right. He has the ammunition to do it, besides being one of the dopest with a sampler, he can also rap and sing his ass off.
It looks like it's finally happening. After talk of solo rap albums, projects dedicated to the late Dilla and Proof and mixtapes showcasing affiliates and understudies, Mr. Porter ventures out on his own with the free beat tape Porter Chops Glasper. In the span of 22 tracks, Porter takes jazz pianist Robert Glasper's songs and live performances, and dismembers them to pieces and then rearranges them into beautiful and powerful frankenstein compositions. Think of a more aggressive Karriem Riggins behind the MPC or a weedless Madlib, and you begin to get the idea of the monster that Porter has unleashed.
Check out the lead track "Dutch Master Roland" and see if you can keep still.
