I heard a story once about a poet and her writing process. She'd sit quietly in her isolated hillside home, pen in hand, waiting for the poem. She'd feel the poem moving through the landscape, the earth trembling with its approach, and catch it via her pen as it passed. Tail first, she would then transcribe the poem from end to beginning.
I've thought about this numerous times since it landed between my ears. My understanding of it has transmuted into several iterations, one such iteration involving musicians. You see, I think of musicians as gifted in some regard. To me, musicians are these beautiful vessels that are lucky enough to possess the talent necessary to channel the whispers of the universe.
Mr. Gnome's "Mind's Gone" brings this to mind when reading the artist's experience of the song's unfolding:
"'Mind’s Gone' is a song that was written at the height of one of the darkest moments in our lives. I was really struggling with the loss of two very special people in our lives, and it was all really messing with my head and leaving me feeling like I had lost a part of myself that I wasn’t sure I could ever get back. During this time, I was doing a lot of solo writing sessions, and this song popped into my head out of nowhere—the full song, full melodies, lyrics, and music. It was as if something else was writing this song through me, like my antenna was tuned into the right frequency at the right moment."
It's a song that, when it meets the mind, feels tender to the touch. Its beauty grows as it unfolds. A stunning vocal performance breathes life into raw lyrics, while gentle percussion carries the instrumentation forward, before the guitar-like vocal crooning highlights the unique creativity of this band.
The upcoming LP, A Sliver of Space, is set to be released September 27th on El Marko Records.
