Montgomery is the latest signee for Australian label I OH YOU, the influential tastemakers behind Violent Soho, DZ Deathrays, DMAs, and more. And considering I OH YOU’s most recent releases have been explosive mosh-pit-inducers, this is a strikingly different new addition.
"War Cry" is Montgomery’s debut single. It’s our first taste of her forthcoming EP, New Clear War, which she co-produced with the always wonderful Tom Iansek (Big Scary).
Montgomery's dulcet tone is so celestial, so charming -- it's almost childlike in its innocence. The lush soundscape builds from the first moments, carefully adding one layer at a time.
The track radiates a gentle otherworldliness. Save for a brief spike, the first couple minutes are a languid lullaby. As the beat gains momentum and the atmosphere fills out, "War Cry" quickly flourishes and expands, all topped off with Montgomery's angelic lilt.
You can definitely hear Tom Iansek's influence here – gorgeous chords, flickering synths, and quietly commanding beats create an endlessly blissful atmosphere. This is a promising debut for the upcoming Gold Coast singer. I’ve got high hopes for Montgomery.
New Clear War drops on October 24.
