Why do we like this?

For those unfamiliar with Japanese post-rock group Mono, I am thrilled to be the one to introduce you to them. Since 1999, the Tokyo-four piece have been creating some of the most breathtaking instrumental music in the world. In case you want any more proof than this single here, listen to my personal favorite track.

With gorgeous tones, impeccable musicianship and the ability to keep you engaged throughout a 7+ minute song, Mono easily matches the power of groups like Sigur Ros and Explosions in the Sky. Add to that a deliberate, distinctly Japanese delicacy, and you've got the makings of something unlike anything else.

“Where We Begin” is a single from their forthcoming double set of concept albums, both coming out in October. The Last Dawn (on which you'll find this single) is the 'brighter' of the two, and each tackle opposing themes of light and dark. In contrast to companion album Rays Of Darkness, The Last Dawn explores escaping from that darkness, and seeking the light.

A majestic, captivating track from start to finish, the soaring soundscape is nothing short of emotionally and sonically dazzling. There aren't enough words in the English language to describe Mono's music. You just need to hear it.
