It’s something of an amazing trick to make music that conveys claustrophobic tension AND a pupil-dilating sense of trippiness at the same time. But musical futurist Mono/Polydefinitely meets that challenge with the single, “Promise It’ll Never Be The Same."
The immersive instrumental (which is lifted from the MISSION 01 compilation album from Vision Recordings) roots itself in an uneasy beauty that’s built from booming drum-machine thumps, glitchy synth squalls, and otherworldly tones. The tense and slow-rising build-up that spans the first third of the track's three-minute running time morphs into a thundering stomp through dark skies once it gets fully going.
Lately, the L.A. based producer/arranger and Brainfeeder affiliate has made his most recent work exclusive to the supporters of his Patreon account, so this newest release may feel like a cold drink of water to those fans wanting to hear new music from Mono/Poly but haven’t yet subscribed to his artist-supporting campaign. It’s also a short yet absorbing mind-trip for those of us feeling a sense of future-shock brought on by the times in which we live.
