If you would tell the average fan that Mogwai has been making music for almost 25 years, they would laugh and scoff, though nothing would be less true. Since their debut in February '96, they've been making the same math-infused instrumental rock tunes. Tunes that reek of wine and Scottish melancholy.
Mogwai has always toyed with various genres within the instrumental realm; there has always been a hint of electronica, combined with a darkness that would be at home on a My Bloody Valentine record. On their new single, however, things have gotten far dreamier. Their dark side has been traded in for gloomy synth pads and drums that would make even Portishead jealous. You can almost hear the LSD.
Let yourself go into dreamland with "Dry Fantasy," and don't be afraid to hit repeat whenever you wake up. Mogwai's new album, As The Love Continues, comes out February 19th. Let's just go to sleep until then.
